Family Rosary Rally at Elder High School Stadium

MAY 20, 2007 – 2:00 P.M.

Many of you have read in the Catholic Telegraph about the gigantic Rosary Rally that occurs each year in Dayton, Ohio. In 2006, approximately four thousand participated.  Recently a Family Rosary Rally was begun in Cincinnati and this year we are urging as many people as possible to join us in this wonderful opportunity to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, on May 20th at Elder High School Stadium. The Rally will begin at 2:00 P.M. and will last approximately one hour.

We hope all Knights of Columbus will join us at this event, along with their families, friends and fellow parishioners. Members of the Fourth Degree are asked to attend in full regalia.

Would you ask your Pastor for an opportunity to advertise this program in your parish bulletin, or perhaps, even make an announcement from the pulpit? You could also ask your D.R.E.s and School Principals for their help?

Choirs from every parish are invited to participate in mass Music will all be those most familiar in this area. A special section of the stadium will be reserved and there will be a choir rehearsal at 12:30 p.m. in the Stadium.

First communicants, in their communion outfits, are welcome to process in along with the priests as the services begin. The organizers need to know how many choir members and first communicants will be in attendance.

Call Guy Lanenbrunner at 513-922-0335; Don Rowekamp, 513-922-4285; Frank Hoffman at 513-574-6473; or Bill Driehaus 513-922-8447 for questions.

You can call them with the information, or mail the information to: Family Rosary Rally, PO Box 58597, Cincinnati, OH 45258-8597.

Please join us for morning mass at Good Shepherd Parish on Monday, May 29. It's a wonderful opportunity to reflect, teach our children and show our gratitude - together, as a Catholic community.

Squires Anniversary of Columbian Squires (August 4, 1925)

The Columbian Squires was created from the vision of Brother Barnabas McDonald, F. S. C. Born in Ogdensburg, NY in 1865. Brother Barnabas entered the Christian Brothers novitiate in 1885. After spending years improving conditions in institutions and foster families for needy boys, he was appointed to head the Boys Life Bureau of the Knights of Columbus, and asked to develop a youth organization for the Order.

Through his efforts the Columbian Squires program was conceived and, on August 4, 1925, at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Duluth, Minn., the very first investiture was held and Duluth Circle 1 was instituted.

Beginning in 1924 Brother Barnabas spent several years teaching a graduate course at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and conducting seminars on working with young people. In 1829 Brother Barnabas died at age 64. He is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. A short distance from his grave stands a large cross erected in his honor by the members of the organization he founded 75 years ago.

Approximately 30,000 Squires belong to more than 1,000 Circles. The Squires are active throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Squires'activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility. The year 2000 marked the 75th anniversary of the Squires — 75 years of providing support to thousands of young men on their way to adulthood.

The Columbian Squires program was begun in order to give young men a better opportunity in life – a chance to receive the leadership training and the spiritual and moral guidance they will need in order to succeed. Many different types of organizations for young men exist in today’s world; what makes the Squires different?

  • The purpose of the Squires program is to develop young men as Catholic leaders who understand their religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of living their lives in the manner of the youth Christ.
  • A Squires circle is designed to be run both by and for young men. If a squire is to be a leader, he must, to the degree that he is able, be given the opportunity to lead. In the Squires, he is given this opportunity.
  • The Squires is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training program and a spiritual awareness course all rolled into one. The Columbian Squires program is well rounded, because our Church and nations need well rounded men who can lead.
  • The above three points make the Columbian Squires different from most other youth organizations in the world today. Finally, the uniqueness of the Columbian Squires is enhanced even more by it association with the Knights of Columbus.

Knights of Columbus - Family Week

Knights of Columbus Family Week, provides councils with the opportunity to show appreciation for their families and a chance to hold family activities.

During Family Week, and through the entire year, work to strengthen families by nourishing wholesome home life.

    • Urge families to take time out of their schedules to spend time together and talk.

    • Encourage members and their families to choose the Holy Family as their model of interdependence, sharing and respect for authority.

Councils throughout the Order regularly sponsor support groups for new parents, scholarships, baby-sitting services, fund-raisers for families in need, clothing and food drives for needy families, seminars of parenting, family recognition programs, and other family-related projects.

Our celebration of the family doesn’t have to be a private matter. Open it up to non-members, prospects, parishioners, friends, priests, religious and anyone else in your community.

Let people throughout your community join your celebration and show the world that families make up the skyline of our communities.

The Emblem of the Fourth DegreeThe emblem of the Fourth Degree features the dove, the cross and the globe. The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit and reflects peace. This symbol of peace hovers over the globe (the earth). Both the dove and the globe are mounted on a variation of the Crusader's Cross found on the tunics and capes of the knights who battled to regain the Holy Land from the pagans. The colors of the emblem, red, white and blue, are the colors of the flag of our country in which our order originated. The colors of our emblem reflect the basic principle of the Fourth Degree, Patriotism.

    Prayer for Peace
Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace

The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace strives to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will – regardless of their religious faith – in prayer for peace.

While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of American lives, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world.

“The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring the world to the Church’s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.

“In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice,” he added.

History of The Blue Mass: In 1934, a Catholic Priest by the name of Thomas Dade from Baltimore, Maryland Archdiocese initiated the Catholic Police and Firemen's Society while stationed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. About 1,100 police and firemen dressed in blue uniforms marched into St. Patrick's Catholic Church for the celebration of the First Blue Mass on September 29th, 1934.

The Blue Mass will honor of our courageous Public Safety Professionals who so generously dedicate their lives to the protection and safety of our area. The BLUE MASS, celebrated to honor the men and women in blue, has become an annual tradition in cities across the United States.

    History of Red Mass

The solemn votive Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit, is celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year. Judges and lawyers attend in a body, joined by public officials and law faculty members. Although this Mass is used at the opening of legislative assemblies and school terms, indications suggest it was first associated with the law profession, and the appellation "Red Mass" customarily refers to the Mass initiating the legal year.

This venerable custom originated in Europe in the 13th century. From the time of Edward I, the Mass was offered at Westminster Abbey at the opening of the Michaelmas term. It received its name trom the fact that the celebrant was vested in red and the Lord High justices were robed in brilliant scarlet. They were joined by the university professors with doctors among them displaying red in their academic gowns. Today the Catholic judges assemble at the Westminster Cathedral for the celebration of the Red Mass, and a short distance away in ancient Westminster Abbey the non-Catholic jurists attend religious worship.

In France, the inauguration of the judicial year was celebrated annually at the famous Sante-Chapelle. Although the chapel was desecrated during the French Revolution, it was restored by Louis Phillipe and dedicated exclusively to the use of the "Messe Rouge". In 1906, the Parliament secularized the Chapel and the celebration transferred to Saint-Germain-1' Auzerrois.

The Red Mass has also been traditionally identified with opening of the Sacred Roman Rota, the supreme judicial body of the Catholic Church.

The inauguration of the Red Mass in the United States occurred in new York City on October 6, 1928. This Mass was celebrated at Old St. Andrew's Church on Duane Street with Cardinal Patrick Hayes presiding. Other localities followed, e.g., Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco and Washington D:c. Over 25 cities witness this testimonial offaith each year, and the trend is on the increase. In the US. not only Catholic but also Protestant and Jewish members of the judiciary and legal profession attend the Mass.

The Red mass is offered to invoke divine guidance and strength during the coming term of Court. It is celebrated in honor of the Holy Spirt as the source of wisdom, understanding, counsel and fortitude, gifts which shine forth preeminently in the dispensing of justice in the courtroom as well as in the individual lawyer' s office.

Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church

Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church
    Can Now Be Ordered Online

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a digest of the essential truths of the Catholic Faith presented in a simple and readable manner.

Catholics' hunger for the faith continues to grow. Pope Benedict XVI gives the Church the "food" that is seeks in the 598 questions and answers in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 200-page volume offers a quick synopsis of the essential contents of the faith as promulgated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Like the 1992 Catechism, the Compendium has a four-part structure, and includes a section on common prayers and Catholic doctrinal formulas. Because of the question-and-answer format, catechetical leaders-parents, pastors, teachers, principals, and catechists-have a unique opportunity to dialogue with the faithful, and reinvigorate the Church's ongoing mission of evangelization and catechesis. Individuals can come "to know the unfathomable riches of the salvific mystery of Jesus Christ" by reading, using, and memorizing parts of the Compendium of the Catechism. An essential tool for youth and young adults, the Compendium is the perfect companion to a youth or young adult's Bible, spiritual reading, or textbook. Catechetical leaders in high schools, colleges, and parishes will appreciate its versatility-as a reference book, discussion starter, or core resource for RCIA programs.

Life Chain - Respect Life Sunday:

This year's Life Chain will be held Sunday, October ? (Respect Life Sunday), from 2 - 3 PM. Crowd marshals should be there at 1:15 PM. We will meet at St. Thomas More's Pavilion area in back of the church. It's the same stretch of Beechmont Ave (RT. 125) as last year. From 275 South go left at Beechmont Ave (heading East) and go about a quarter of a mile. There's about a 7/10 of a mile stretch with side walks on both sides of the street (about form Walgreens to just past the Union Township Fire Station). St. Thomas More Church is on the left side of Beechmont; just pull into the back lot and you will see the pavilion.

Crowds will hold up pro life signs for one hour. Crowd marshals are needed for the event. (last year we had 18 knights perform this duty) Duties include:

    • Distributing the crowd evenly out along the route

    Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall

The Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall, entering it's 18th year of scares, will open September 28 this year and runs until October 27. All season, mild mannered parishioners involved with the Boy Scouts and the Knights of Columbus transform themselves from well mannered citizens into manic clowns, goblins, mad doctors and more. There's the usual Frankenstein, Mummy, Werewolf, Dracula and assorted Undead. The Vortex Tunnel will mess with your sense of equilibrium. The Electric Chari will curl your hair and beware of the Spinning Floor. And don't forget the Blackout Maze at the end.

A few changes this year - Admissions is $10 with a $2 discount for canned good donation that are distributed through St. Vincent DePaul Society. New this year is a "Fast Pass" admission option which will take you to the front of the line for $15 (no discount allowed). The Haunted Hall is sponsored this year by The Wiz radio station and there will be special station promotions through the entire month.>/p>

Also this year we will be having two "Lights Up" performances on Sunday afternoons where the lights will be left on overhead and the scare factor will be almost non-existent. This is primarily for younger kids who want to go through but their parents would like them to be able to sleep at night. The ghouls will be passing out candy as a bonus. Admission for Lights Up is $7 per person (no discount allowed).

Come out one Friday(8 - 11 PM), Saturday(8 - 11 PM), or Sunday(7 - 9 PM) nights the Haunted Hall is open and get the bejeebers scared out of you. For more information, call 513-729-1974. www.CincyHaunts
