The Emblem of the Fourth DegreeThe emblem of the Fourth Degree features the dove, the cross and the globe. The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit and reflects peace. This symbol of peace hovers over the globe (the earth). Both the dove and the globe are mounted on a variation of the Crusader's Cross found on the tunics and capes of the knights who battled to regain the Holy Land from the pagans. The colors of the emblem, red, white and blue, are the colors of the flag of our country in which our order originated. The colors of our emblem reflect the basic principle of the Fourth Degree, Patriotism.

Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament

When the K of C was more active in this joint event, the MDA regularly benefited with proceeds in the $8 to $10 K range each year.  That is impressive, and doable again with a little effort (with effort being the operable word). If the Masons can have many teams participating, why can't we?  Are they more supportive of charity?

The event is scheduled at 1 PM at the Brentwood Bowl in Finneytown, with teams asked to plan on arriving by 12:30 PM.  I know we have a lot of good bowlers out there (not that good matters when it's for charity).  And this is a great Community project, as well as a fun way to support MDA with some friendly competition between the Masons and the Knights.  Please promote this event in your Councils and Assemblies!  Have fun; make money for MDA!

Family Rosary Rally at Elder High School Stadium

 2:00 P.M.

Many of you have read in the Catholic Telegraph about the gigantic Rosary Rally that occurs each year in Dayton, Ohio. In 2006, approximately four thousand participated.  Recently a Family Rosary Rally was begun in Cincinnati and this year we are urging as many people as possible to join us in this wonderful opportunity to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, on May 20th at Elder High School Stadium. The Rally will begin at 2:00 P.M. and will last approximately one hour.

We hope all Knights of Columbus will join us at this event, along with their families, friends and fellow parishioners. Members of the Fourth Degree are asked to attend in full regalia.

Would you ask your Pastor for an opportunity to advertise this program in your parish bulletin, or perhaps, even make an announcement from the pulpit? You could also ask your D.R.E.s and School Principals for their help?

Choirs from every parish are invited to participate in mass Music will all be those most familiar in this area. A special section of the stadium will be reserved and there will be a choir rehearsal at 12:30 p.m. in the Stadium.

First communicants, in their communion outfits, are welcome to process in along with the priests as the services begin. The organizers need to know how many choir members and first communicants will be in attendance.

Call Guy Lanenbrunner at 513-922-0335; Don Rowekamp, 513-922-4285; Frank Hoffman at 513-574-6473; or Bill Driehaus 513-922-8447 for questions.

You can call them with the information, or mail the information to: Family Rosary Rally, PO Box 58597, Cincinnati, OH 45258-8597.

Memorial Day - Mass with the Archbishop Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr, Coadjutor - Celebrant Archbishop Schnurr

At Gate of Heaven Cemetery Mass at 11:00 AM

Sir Knights asked to arrive by 10:00 AM in Full Regalia.

Belonging to the Catholic community is being part of a family. It ensures love, support and lasting memories.

On Memorial Day, take time out to remember the brothers and sisters of our parishes who have gone before us. And honor the men and women who died protecting our freedoms in the service to this nation. Their lives and sacrifices are appreciated as much now as ever.

Please join us for morning mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Monday, May 25. It's a wonderful opportunity to reflect, teach our children and show our gratitude - together, as a Catholic community.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

(In the event of inclement weather, the Service will be held at Good Shepherd Parish, 8815 East Kemper Road, in Montgomery.)

The grounds at Gate of Heaven Cemetery are open daily from dawn until dusk for vistitation and reflection.

Squires Anniversary of Columbian Squires (August 4, 1925)

The Columbian Squires was created from the vision of Brother Barnabas McDonald, F. S. C. Born in Ogdensburg, NY in 1865. Brother Barnabas entered the Christian Brothers novitiate in 1885. After spending years improving conditions in institutions and foster families for needy boys, he was appointed to head the Boys Life Bureau of the Knights of Columbus, and asked to develop a youth organization for the Order.

Through his efforts the Columbian Squires program was conceived and, on August 4, 1925, at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Duluth, Minn., the very first investiture was held and Duluth Circle 1 was instituted.

Beginning in 1924 Brother Barnabas spent several years teaching a graduate course at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and conducting seminars on working with young people. In 1829 Brother Barnabas died at age 64. He is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. A short distance from his grave stands a large cross erected in his honor by the members of the organization he founded 75 years ago.

Approximately 30,000 Squires belong to more than 1,000 Circles. The Squires are active throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Squires'activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility. The year 2000 marked the 75th anniversary of the Squires — 75 years of providing support to thousands of young men on their way to adulthood.

The Columbian Squires program was begun in order to give young men a better opportunity in life – a chance to receive the leadership training and the spiritual and moral guidance they will need in order to succeed. Many different types of organizations for young men exist in today’s world; what makes the Squires different?

  • The purpose of the Squires program is to develop young men as Catholic leaders who understand their religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of living their lives in the manner of the youth Christ.
  • A Squires circle is designed to be run both by and for young men. If a squire is to be a leader, he must, to the degree that he is able, be given the opportunity to lead. In the Squires, he is given this opportunity.
  • The Squires is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training program and a spiritual awareness course all rolled into one. The Columbian Squires program is well rounded, because our Church and nations need well rounded men who can lead.
  • The above three points make the Columbian Squires different from most other youth organizations in the world today. Finally, the uniqueness of the Columbian Squires is enhanced even more by it association with the Knights of Columbus.

Knights of Columbus - Family Week

Knights of Columbus Family Week, provides councils with the opportunity to show appreciation for their families and a chance to hold family activities.

During Family Week, and through the entire year, work to strengthen families by nourishing wholesome home life.

    • Urge families to take time out of their schedules to spend time together and talk.

    • Encourage members and their families to choose the Holy Family as their model of interdependence, sharing and respect for authority.

Councils throughout the Order regularly sponsor support groups for new parents, scholarships, baby-sitting services, fund-raisers for families in need, clothing and food drives for needy families, seminars of parenting, family recognition programs, and other family-related projects.

Our celebration of the family doesn’t have to be a private matter. Open it up to non-members, prospects, parishioners, friends, priests, religious and anyone else in your community.

Let people throughout your community join your celebration and show the world that families make up the skyline of our communities.

Keep Christ in Christmas "Keep Christ in Christmas" Campaign

As a reminder, last year we piggy-backed on an idea another K of C Council started to help promote "KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS" which consisted of a beautiful car magnet in the shape of the Nativity Scene, with the words "Keep Christ in Christmas" below it. This attractive magnet is a wonderful form of silent evangelization and we are making the offer again this year for all Chapter affiliates accommodating many requests for a continuation of this product to sell again this year.

With all the distractions we face during His season, we are trying to get more and more magnets out there in traffic, and highly visible, to remind people why we have CHRISTmas! Last year's program was very well received and we sold out early. Not all orders could be filled. Placing orders early this year will assure everyone gets to participate and market these magnets to your Councils and Churches. We found that not only was this

A great way to promote silent evangelization

(can you imagine the impact if every Christian automobile had one of these on the back?), but is also doubled as an easy way for youth groups, men's groups, and congregations to

Raise funds for your Council and the Chapter!

Like last year, we will sell these magnets for $1.50 each in boxes of 200 (each magnet comes individually packaged for easy handling). The feedback from last year indicated groups were distributing these for donations of $4.00 and $5.00 each to help the Chapter with fundraising and to raise funds for your K of C Council. Last year demand exceeded our supply very early, so we are coming to you now to make sure we can fill any orders you may wish to place for 2006.

As we did last year, we need to receive your payment prior to shipping. Contact us with any questions at or by calling Jay Porcaro at 513-722-1671. Once we have your order and payment, we will place your order for prompt delivery in time for coordinated promotion and sales.

Together we can put a reminder to Keep Christ in Christmas on a million cars and trucks! Vivat Jesus!

    Prayer for Peace
Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace

The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace strives to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will – regardless of their religious faith – in prayer for peace.

While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of American lives, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world.

“The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring the world to the Church’s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.

“In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice,” he added.

    History of Red Mass

The solemn votive Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit, is celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year. Judges and lawyers attend in a body, joined by public officials and law faculty members. Although this Mass is used at the opening of legislative assemblies and school terms, indications suggest it was first associated with the law profession, and the appellation "Red Mass" customarily refers to the Mass initiating the legal year.

This venerable custom originated in Europe in the 13th century. From the time of Edward I, the Mass was offered at Westminster Abbey at the opening of the Michaelmas term. It received its name trom the fact that the celebrant was vested in red and the Lord High justices were robed in brilliant scarlet. They were joined by the university professors with doctors among them displaying red in their academic gowns. Today the Catholic judges assemble at the Westminster Cathedral for the celebration of the Red Mass, and a short distance away in ancient Westminster Abbey the non-Catholic jurists attend religious worship.

In France, the inauguration of the judicial year was celebrated annually at the famous Sante-Chapelle. Although the chapel was desecrated during the French Revolution, it was restored by Louis Phillipe and dedicated exclusively to the use of the "Messe Rouge". In 1906, the Parliament secularized the Chapel and the celebration transferred to Saint-Germain-1' Auzerrois.

The Red Mass has also been traditionally identified with opening of the Sacred Roman Rota, the supreme judicial body of the Catholic Church.

The inauguration of the Red Mass in the United States occurred in new York City on October 6, 1928. This Mass was celebrated at Old St. Andrew's Church on Duane Street with Cardinal Patrick Hayes presiding. Other localities followed, e.g., Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco and Washington D:c. Over 25 cities witness this testimonial offaith each year, and the trend is on the increase. In the US. not only Catholic but also Protestant and Jewish members of the judiciary and legal profession attend the Mass.

The Red mass is offered to invoke divine guidance and strength during the coming term of Court. It is celebrated in honor of the Holy Spirt as the source of wisdom, understanding, counsel and fortitude, gifts which shine forth preeminently in the dispensing of justice in the courtroom as well as in the individual lawyer' s office.

The Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall , entering it's 19th year of scares, will open October 3 this year and runs until November 1. There's the usual Frankenstein, Mummy, Werewolf, Dracula and assorted Undead. The Vortex Tunnel will mess with your sense of equilibrium. The Electric Chair will curl your hair and beware of the Spinning Floor. And don't forget the Blackout Maze at the end.

New this year is a "Fast Pass" admission option which will take you to the front of the line for $15 (no discount allowed). The Haunted Hall is sponsored this year by The Wiz radio station and there will be special station promotions through the entire month.

Also this year we will be having one "Lights Up" performances on Sunday afternoons where the lights will be left on overhead and the scare factor will be almost non-existent. This is primarily for younger kids who want to go through but their parents would like them to be able to sleep at night. The ghouls will be passing out candy as a bonus. Admission for Lights Up is $5 per kid (Adults are free).

Come out one Friday(8 - 11 PM), Saturday(8 - 11 PM), or Sunday(7 - 9 PM) nights the Haunted Hall is open and get the bejeebers scared out of you. For more information, call 513-729-1974. www.CincyHaunts

Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church

Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church Compendium - Catechism of the Catholic Church
    Can Now Be Ordered Online

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a digest of the essential truths of the Catholic Faith presented in a simple and readable manner.

Catholics' hunger for the faith continues to grow. Pope Benedict XVI gives the Church the "food" that is seeks in the 598 questions and answers in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 200-page volume offers a quick synopsis of the essential contents of the faith as promulgated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Like the 1992 Catechism, the Compendium has a four-part structure, and includes a section on common prayers and Catholic doctrinal formulas. Because of the question-and-answer format, catechetical leaders-parents, pastors, teachers, principals, and catechists-have a unique opportunity to dialogue with the faithful, and reinvigorate the Church's ongoing mission of evangelization and catechesis. Individuals can come "to know the unfathomable riches of the salvific mystery of Jesus Christ" by reading, using, and memorizing parts of the Compendium of the Catechism. An essential tool for youth and young adults, the Compendium is the perfect companion to a youth or young adult's Bible, spiritual reading, or textbook. Catechetical leaders in high schools, colleges, and parishes will appreciate its versatility-as a reference book, discussion starter, or core resource for RCIA programs.

    Thurday November 25, 2010

    Thanksgiving Day

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor -- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks -- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation -- for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility [sic], union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed -- for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted -- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions -- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually -- to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed -- to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn [sic] kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord -- To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease [sic] of science among them and us -- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

    Feast of Immaculate Conception

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated every year on the eighth of December. Even though this feast day occurs in the liturgical season of Advent, which prepares for the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception asserts that, " from the first moment of her conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary was, by the singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of Mankind, kept free from all stain of original sin."

Theological debate concerning the absence of original sin in the person of Mary began as early as the second century with the writings of Saints Justin and Ireneus. St. Ephraem of Syria wrote in the Nisibene Hymns: "Certainly You alone and your mother are from every aspect completely beautiful for there is no blemish in Thee, my Lord, and no stain in Thy mother." (Hymn. B. Maria 13:5-6)

This feast day had a very long and slow development. In the Eastern Church, the feast of the Nativity of Mary, September 8th, was celebrated as early as the late 6th century. In the early 7th century, the feast of the Mary's conception was observed in the East. The feast of the Conception of Mary was introduced in Naples around 850 and in England around 1030. After the Norman conquest in 1066, it passed then to Normandy, France, Spain, Germany and Belgium.

In the Middle Ages, Sts. Bernard of Clairvaux, Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas as well as the first Franciscan theologians all objected to this feast based on the universality of sin and the need to be redeemed by Christ. The Franciscan theologian, Blessed John Duns Scotus (1266-1308) wrote on the question of Mary's sinlessness in his theological treatises and defended Mary's privilege in its fullness from the beginning of her life. Mary's conception without original sin was not seen as an "exception" but rather "preservation" from original sin. Mary was truly redeemed by the future merits of Jesus Christ, since she is not outside the universal need for redemption. She was preserved immune by the intervention of God. The Second Vatican Council uses the language of Duns Scotus and states that Mary was "redeemed in a more excellent fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son." (Lumen Gentium, 53)

After several centuries of controversy, Pope Sixtus IV intervened in the year 1476 with the constitution, Cum Praeexcelsa, whereby he permitted the liturgical celebration of the Mass and Office of the feast. He also dedicated a chapel to the Immaculate Virgin in St. Peter's Basilica. The Mass and Office of the Immaculate Conception was approved for the whole Church by Pope Innocent XII in 1695 and the feast was made a holy day of obligation by Pope Clement XI in 1708.

The apparitions of Mary to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830 under the image of the Miraculous Medal helped to give further support , with its invocation, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

In 1847, Pope Pius IX (1846-1878) consulted the cardinals of the church about the possibility of defining the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, An encyclical, Ubi Primum, was sent to the 603 bishops of the world asking their thoughts . Only four or five bishops opposed definability and several others questioned the "opportuneness" of the definition. On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX solemnly defined the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception with the papal bull, Ineffabilis Deus. Several years later, in 1858, the Blessed Mother gave her name to St. Bernadette at Lourdes stating, "I am the Immaculate Conception."

As we celebrate the beautiful solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady, may Mary's holiness encourage us to seek her help and continued protection in our own efforts to overcome sin and lead holy, sanctified lives.
